Shing02 & Nujabes: Luv(sic) 2 .:May 21 10:.
Even with Nujabes' untimely passing, his music and legacy live on. Here is just one example. I love the simplicity and absolute absurdity of this video. Shingo definetly does his thing but Nujabes??? All I can say is... I love it when a tune makes you FEEL a certain way. This video for some reason just makes you FEEL good! LOL!!! Enjoy this as we slide into the weekend. "Perhaps we're even closer now after all things considered on this side of the planet, Couldn't pick a better time even if we planned it... To come clean and candid if I have to... Oh what I wouldn't trade for your laughter..."

Damn... Guru... .:Apr 20 10:.
Growing up in National City, we were surrounded by a lot of eses, graff writiers, lowriders and wanna-bes. I know that I fell into one of (if not ALL) of those categories at one time or another...
Fortunately, I was surrounded by peeps who loved the culture as much as I did. One of my fondest memories growing up was when I FIRST heard the "Step In The Arena" album. I was in jr high and I can honestly say Gangstarr changed my LIFE! My boy Jojo had a HUGE boombox that he painted up COMPLETE with graff and characters and YES... we WERE those kids walking around the park or school yard BUMPIN loud ass rap music. On rotation? Kwame, Red Head Kingpin, NWA and of COURSE... Gangstarr. Guru's voice MELTED over Primo's beats and I KNEW that I was listening to something TRULY extraordinary when we cracked open this tape. Primo's cuts in the beginning of "What do you want this time?"... Guru comin in with "Even if you or your brothers a star, he could pop you and jet without a get away car... and some might say that hes a dummy, but he's stickin you and takin all of your money..." WOOO!!! Sadly though, I did not keep up with too much more of Guru's work until Jazzmatazz. This was yet another album that we bumped in the halls of Sweetwater High... so much so that one of my homies even got a hat embroidered with "Loungin" on it. (To this day I still don't know why he got THAT of all things embroidered on a hat but whatever...) SO many memories to talk about...
One memory that DOES stick out though was when I met Guru in LA. I was at The Palace to watch The Visionaries and Ras Kass and after all the performances, the party was back in FULL effect. I'm dacing with this girl and bump into who else??? Mister Gifted Unlimited. First thought in my head was "WOW I thought he would be taller?" Starstruck, I mustered up the words "What up Guru!?" And although he was trying to keep a low pro he still said "What up man how you feel?"
Here I was standing face to face with one of the MCs who meant the MOST to me and I couldn't convey to him how much his words and music meant to me. I guess I will never get that chance. Here's to you Guru! May your words and music live forever thorugh those you have touched... Myself included.
Jose' James .:Apr 03 10:.
So... my goal for the last 2 weeks, [with my insomnia getting the best of me] has been to "discover" 2 new artists each day, that I was not previously familiar with. Old, new, hip hop, jazz, funk... Betty Carter, Athene Wilson, Little Jimmy Scott, The Bamboos, Rocky Rivera, Hudson Mohawke... some you've heard of... some you may not have heard of. One of the most notable has been the works of Jose' James from Brooklyn. Apparently he has some earlier works with Jazzaanova, Mitsu The Beats [of whom I have been a fan of] and a piano trio called J.A.M. If anyone knows how to get ahold of this cat, PLEASE let me know; JABAone@HomegrownBlends.com Regardless of what the haters say, Jose James' cover of Freestyle Fellowship's "Park Bench People" FLOORED ME! PEEP!also Also peep out the title joint "The Dreamer" from his album of the same name released in 2008. This song brought TEARS to my eyes. WOW!!! NOTHING has moved me this much since I first heard Miles' "Blue In Green" or when I saw Grover do "Can You Stop The Rain" in concert at Humphrey's here in San Diego in 1998. WOW!!! That's all I can say is WOW...
